WCT director Kenny Wong, who is also a Selangor fan, was present to distribute tickets to the football fans.
“I have been a strong supporter of Selangor since my school days. I also have a jersey with Dollah Salleh and Zainal Abidin Hassan’s signature. I treasure the jersey.
“I am looking forward to the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup football competition,’’ said Kenny.
Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah initiated the competition in 2001 to foster better relations between Selangor and Singapore.
Then, it was known as the Regent of Selangor Cup. Selangor Selection became the inaugural champions when they defeated the Singapore Selection 4-2.
With the Sultan’s coronation in 2003, the competition was renamed the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup. The main match is between the Selangor Selection and Singapore.
A match between the Selangor veterans and their counterparts from Singapore will be the curtain raiser.
Selangor and Singapore were champions on five occasions each. They were declared joint champions in 2004.
Last year, Selangor wrested the trophy from the Lions when they won 3-1. The Red Giants, with goals from Safiq Rahim and Rozaimi Abdul Rahman (two), celebrated in front of 65,000 fans. Singapore’s goal came from Aleksander Duric.
Abdul Karim Munisar said they were surprised with the encouraging turnout for the programme.
“Their presence has certainly motivated us to make the competition an exciting and entertaining affair. We will be having a series of events to promote the competition. We have also distributed complimentary tickets to schools in Selangor, Besides watching the football match, fans will also be entertained by local artistes and cheer-leading performances.
“There will also be a fireworks display and an exciting formation by schoolchildren,’’ said Abdul Karim.
Selangor import Liberian Francis Doe was present along with his teammates and caretaker coach P. Maniam to sign autographs for fans.
Abdul Karim added that the lucky draw would offer attractive prizes for fans purchasing tickets priced at RM10.
“We are expecting a crowd of about 80,000 for this year’s competition,’’ he added.
