The Football Association of Selangor have named a strong 20-member team for the match. Besides the trio, Selangor also have their two imports — Adam Griffith and Francis Forkey Doe — in the squad.
The other prominent players in the Red Giants’ list are K. Gurusamy, S. Kunalan, Mohd Amri Yahyah and Mahali Jasuli.
Selangor’s campaign in the Malaysia Cup ended on a winning note when they defeated Johor 2-1 in their final group match.
However, they failed to advance to the quarter-finals.
Selangor coach P. Maniam said they resumed training on Tuesday and added that the players were determined to do well in the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup.
“We are the defending champions and of course, we would like to maintain our winning streak in the competition.
“The players are also aware of the expectations. We will be well prepared to take on the Lions,’’ said Maniam.
The tournament is being held for the 12th season. Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah initiated the competition in 2001 to foster better relations between Selangor and Singapore. At the time, it was known as the Regent of Selangor Cup.
Selangor Selection became the inaugural champions when they defeated the Singapore Selection 4-2.
With the coronation of the Sultan in 2003, the competition was renamed the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup.
Also on Saturday, there is a match between the Selangor veterans and their counterparts from Singapore that will serve as the curtain-raiser.
Last year, Selangor regained the trophy from the Lions when they won 3-1. The Red Giants, with goals from Safiq Rahim, Rozaimi Abdul Rahman and Bosko Balaban, celebrated in front of 65,000 fans. Singapore’s goal came from Aleksander Duric.
Earlier, the Singapore Veterans edged out their Selangor counterparts 2-1 in the curtain-raiser.
The Selangor veterans will also have several former internationals in their line-up.
Among them are Datuk Soh Chin Aun, Dollah Salleh, Zainal Abidin Hassan, K. Senbagamaran, Rashid Hassan, K. Gunalan Ismail Ibrahim and P. Somasundram.
The organising committee, headed by Datuk Abdul Karim Munisar, said they were looking forward to a bumper crowd for the event.
“We have been getting a lot of encouraging feedback during our promotion campaign,” said Abdul Karim.
“A lot of fans are eager to see the former greats in action.’’
