“We are grateful to the teachers from the schools for their efforts in encouraging the students to take part in the carnival. It was also refreshing to see young boys and girls from different races playing as a team.
“Looking at their happy faces, we are confident they had a good time. It was also encouraging to see them mingling with students from other schools in a friendly atmosphere.
“We are keen to initiate a programme for the Under-10 age group. We have discussed the matter with the Petaling Utama District Education Department. If everything goes as planned, we will start the programme in early January,’’ said Akilan.
Former Selangor players – A. Aritharan, S. Thiagu and V. Vijaysilan – were also present to support the players as well as serve as technical officials.
In the boys’ category, after the preliminary rounds, SMK La Salle PJ, SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara, SMK Damansara Damai and SMK Seksyen 10 Kota Damansara qualified for the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, SMK La Salle defeated SMK Damansara Damai 18-12 while SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara upstaged SMK Seksyen 10 Kota Damansara 13-3.
The final was exciting with SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara playing exceptionally well with J. Viknes playing as their main raider getting the points. SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara won 28-5.
SMK Damansara Damai settled for the third spot after a 11-7 win over SMK Seksyen 10 Kota Damansara.
SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara’s Viknes emerged the Best Player in the boys’ category.
In the girls’ category, the semi-finalists were SMK (P) Taman Petaling, SMK Seksyen 10 Kota Damansara, SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara and SMK Damansara Damai.
In the semi-finals, SMK (P) Taman Petaling were impressive with their 39-9 win over SMK Damansara Damai while SMK Seksyen 10 Kota Damansara managed to beat SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara A 19-15.
The final, between SMK (P) Taman Petaling and SMK Seksyen 10 Kota Damansara was a close affair. SMK (P) Taman Petaling had T. Neyshini playing an offensive role in getting the points. After a keen contest, SMK (P) Taman Petaling won 24-22 to emerge as the champions.
SMK Seksyen 4 Kota Damansara A were third following a 25-4 win over SMK Damansara Damai. The Best Player award, in the girls’ category, went to Neyshini.
Petaling Utama District Education Department sports development officer Siti Raxkina Ahmad Kulop said they would like to express their appreciations to all for supporting the carnival.
“SportsUnite, Milo and KJKC have shown their commitment to the development of kabaddi in the district. With help from KJKC, we will be initiating other age-group programmes. Our aim is to prepare a strong contingent for next year’s Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) championships,’’ said Siti Raxkina.
In this year’s MSSS championships, organised by the Kabaddi Association of Selangor (KAS) and Selangor Education Department, Petaling Utama won a bronze medal in the girls’ under-15 age group.
SportsUnite Sports Club chairman Datuk Dina Rizal said they had been working with KJKC for about 10 years.
“We will continue to support their efforts to promote the sport at grassroots,’’ added Dina.
