The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) tennis programme, which is held every Sunday at the MPK tennis courts in Klang, is gaining popularity among tennis enthusiasts. Tennis, which used to be a sport for the upper classes, is now taken up by all, no matter their background. MPK tennis coach K, Mahendran, who is also the Selangor Tennis Association (STA) committee member, said he had about 60 trainees, aged between five and 15, who trained every Sunday from 7am to 9am and 3pm to 5pm. Mahendran, who was a former Selangor player, said he was happy that the sport was catching on among the masses in Klang.
“In fact, about 200 enthusiasts gather regularly at four venues – Klang Executive Club, Botanic Resort Club, Klang Club and Pandamaran Sports Complex to play tennis. “The MPK tennis programme has certainly helped boost this game. “Our coaching rates are also very affordable, only RM50 per month for four lessons, two hours each,” he said, adding that the programme had been going on for the last eight years. Coaches Selvaraj Velu and Raja Ani Raja Hussain help Mahendran in the coaching sessions.
“To ensure the trainees remain competitive, I conduct a special training programme every Friday from 8pm to 10pm at MPK tennis courts. “I also register those with potential for the medal competition organized by STA and which is held every month at the MPPJ Sports Complex in Kelana Jaya,” said Mahendran.
