Kuala Lumpur’s girls’ Under-14 trainees had an impressive run with five contenders in the quarter-finals and completed a full-house in the semi-finals.
Tang Weng Xin did not get past the last eight while the duo of Chia Kar Yan and Carrie Tan Jia Le ended their campaign in the semi-finals.
Favourite Nurul Farisha Abd Malek registered a back-to-back victory, retaining her top spot in the girls’ Under-14 singles.
Top seed Nurul Farisha triumphed over team-mate Stephinie Kwek Oi Yen in the final.
It was also an all-Kuala Lumpur affair in the girls’ Under-16 singles with top-ranked Loh Bao Ying defeating her doubles partner Nur Johana Adryana Saha in the meet.
Meanwhile, emerging talent Dyvylyn Saha showed promise and bagged a double in the girls’ Under-12. She lifted the singles title and forged a winning partnership with Erica Hoh Ji Ling in the doubles.
The two were also victorious in the girls’ Under-12 doubles in the first leg.
Among the winners were Wong Yuen Jia (boys’ Under-16 singles) and Leong Wen Hao-Victor Ong Jing Khai (boys’ Under-18 doubles).
Chua Yue Chern-Leong Jun Kai (boys’ Under-12 doubles), Carrie-Nurul Farisha (girls’ Under-14 doubles), Bao Ying-Nur Johana (girls’ Under-16 doubles) and Muhammad Aiman Abd Malek-Ong Shu Yi (boys’ Under-16 doubles) were runners-up in their respective categories.
Kuala Lumpur coach Abdul Halim Abu Bakar admitted that their charges will have to overcome a gruelling period facing back-to-back tournaments during the national schools (MSSM) meet in Labuan from June 4-8 before moving on to the upcoming national junior grand prix finals in Kuantan, Pahang from June 12-16.
“It is taxing but the majority of the junior shuttlers from other states are facing a similar situation.
“It is going to be a survival of the fittest. They must be mentally and physically strong to pull through,” he added.
In April, former national trainee Raymond Steven joined the Kuala Lumpur team as a trainer to help beef up its coaching department which is headed by Halim.
Basaruddin Hasan is the other trainer in the team.
