The organising committee had also invited officials from the Football Association of Selangor, Selangor State Exco as well as former football greats like Datuk Soh Chin Aun and Datuk Santokh Singh to the ceremony.
Former Selangor football manager Mazlan Harun and Football Association of Selangor secretary S. Anthonysamy were also present.
Later, the guests were also invited to the Football Gallery where they had the opportunity to look at Sultan Sharafuddin’s football collection.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had initiated the competition in 2001 to foster better relations between Selangor and Singapore.
Then, it was known as the Regent of Selangor Cup.
Selangor Selection became the inaugural champions when they defeated the Singapore Selection 4-2.
With the coronation of the Sultan in 2003, the competition was renamed the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup.
The main match is between the Selangor Selection and Singapore.
A match between the Selangor veterans and their counterparts from Singapore will be the curtain raiser.
This year’s Sultan of Selangor’s Cup will be the 12th edition. Selangor and Singapore were champions on five occasions each.
Both Selangor and Singapore were declared the joint champions in 2004.
Last year, Selangor wrested the prestigious trophy from the Lions when they won 3-1.
The Red Giants, with goals from Safiq Rahim and Rozaimi Abdul Rahman (two), celebrated in front of 65,000 fans. Singapore’s goal came from Aleksander Duric.
Earlier, the Singapore Veterans edged their Selangor counterparts 2-1 in the curtain raiser.
Abdul Karim said preparations were going well for the competition and tickets, priced at RM10 each, would be available fromtoday.
“A lucky draw, offering attractive prizes, will be held for those purchasing tickets. We have also invited leading cheerleading schools in Selangor to perform at the event.
“There will be a fireworks display as well,’’ added Abdul Karim.
