"I believe Noraseela and Hup Wei know the reason for being left out of the SEA Games. They are experienced and athletes with high calibre. They need to focus on bigger and more prestigious competitions.
"Since some young athletes had shown good performance in the Malaysian Athletic Open recently, they have qualified for the SEA Games and need to be given a chance.
"Hup Wei knows that to qualify for the SEA Games, he need to excel in the Malaysian Athletics Open but he finished in fourth place. The MAU's criteria for selection was based on current performance," he told Bernama when contacted, Wednesday.
The MAU has decided to list 40 athletes for the Myanmar SEA Games, comprising 27 men and 13 women.
Among the notable names in the men's list are Loo Choon Sieng (20km walk); Iskandar Alwi (pole vault); S. Kanathasan (400m); Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian (110m hurdles); Schzuan Ahmad Rosely, P. Yuvaraaj, Anchois Aron, Kwong Kar Jun (4x400m).
Zainal believes the athletics squad would be able to deliver the seven gold medals targetted by the Union.
